This is a test of which frequencies you can still hear. It is not a diagnosis and not a substitute for an audiologist. Press start and it plays a quiet tone at each frequency in turn, one ear at a time, and asks whether you heard it. Which test

Headphones are what make a per-ear result possible. On speakers you get one number for both ears, and most laptop and phone speakers produce almost nothing above 15 kHz, so a low result there is the speaker rather than your ears.

These are population averages, not marks to hit. Around 2 kHz comes off the top of the range per decade for most people, and noise exposure moves it a great deal further than birthdays do.

When a hearing change is worth seeing someone about

Get it looked at if your hearing drops suddenly, if one ear is clearly worse than the other, if there's ringing that won't settle, or if there's pain or discharge. Sudden loss in one ear is treated as urgent, and treatment works better the sooner it starts. Gradual change over years is worth an appointment too, just not a same-week one.

Your result never leaves your device. This tool doesn't even have a server to upload to, there's no account and no email step, and nothing is kept unless you press save.

An uncalibrated browser and consumer headphones are not a calibrated audiometer in a sound booth, so absolute levels here are estimates. The shape of the result, and the difference between your two ears, hold up far better than any single number.

Every tone fades in and out, starts quiet, and is capped well below anything uncomfortable, with a tighter cap above 8 kHz. If a tone ever sounds sharp, turn your system volume down rather than pushing through it.
