Do I need to download or install anything?

No. Everything runs in this browser tab. Upload a photo, zoom in, sample a pixel, or use "Pick from screen," and there's nothing to install and nothing left behind when you close the page.

Does this tool upload my image anywhere?

Accepted Answer

No. Every image you upload and every color you sample is processed entirely in your browser, including HEIC decoding. This tool doesn't even have a server to upload to, so there's nothing for your photo to be sent to in the first place.

How do I get the exact color code from a photo?

Accepted Answer

Upload, drag-and-drop, or paste (Ctrl+V/Cmd+V) your photo, then click anywhere on it. The HEX, RGB, HSL, and CMYK codes for that exact pixel appear instantly, along with its nearest color name. No separate "Convert" step.

Can I zoom in to pick an exact pixel?

Yes. Use the zoom controls above the image for up to 8x magnification, and hover (or move the keyboard crosshair) over any pixel to see it enlarged in a floating loupe before you click.

Yes. Every pixel you click (or commit with Enter on the keyboard) is added to a running palette below the image, so you can build a list of as many colors as you need. No login is required to keep or export it.

Yes. The "Automatic color palette" section below the image generates a representative set of colors from the whole photo the moment it loads, no clicking required. Adjust how many colors it returns, and add any (or all) of them straight into your palette.

Yes. The closest matching name from the standard CSS color list (like "Cornflower Blue" or "Firebrick") is shown automatically next to whichever color you've most recently sampled or selected.

PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, SVG, and AVIF all load directly through your browser's own image decoder, with no conversion step. HEIC photos (see the next question) go through a small decoder that runs entirely in your browser too.

Can I use a HEIC photo from my iPhone?

Yes. HEIC and HEIF photos, the default format iPhones save to, are decoded entirely in your browser before you sample them, without ever leaving your device. If your specific browser can't complete that decode, you'll see a clear error rather than a silently broken image.

Can I pick a color directly from my screen instead of uploading an image?

Yes. Click "Pick from screen" and your cursor turns into an eyedropper you can move over any pixel on your entire screen, not just this browser tab, using the browser's native EyeDropper API. It's added to your palette the same way a clicked pixel is.

Why can't I use "Pick from Screen" in Firefox or Safari?

That's a real limitation of those browsers today, not something left out here: the EyeDropper API that powers on-screen color picking is currently only implemented in Chrome, Edge, and other Chromium-based browsers. In Firefox or Safari, the button is hidden rather than shown as a dead control. Upload or paste an image instead.

Is this a browser extension?

No. This is a website, not an installable browser extension, so there's nothing to add to Chrome or any other browser. If you specifically need an extension, that's a different kind of tool; this page's upload, paste, and "Pick from screen" options cover the same job without installing anything.

Does this work on mobile, and in every browser?

Uploading, dragging, pasting, zooming, and sampling all work on any modern browser, desktop or mobile: Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari all handle it. "Pick from screen" is the one feature with narrower support (see the Firefox/Safari question above), since it depends on a browser API that isn't universal yet, and keyboard crosshair navigation needs a physical keyboard rather than a touchscreen.
